How to Create an Open Class List Spreadsheet

The Open Class Lists make it easier to build your class list by eliminating closed classes and showing all courses on one screen. By importing this list into Microsoft Excel and using Excel's filter tool you can find courses even more quickly. For example, with two clicks, Excel can find all 10:00AM Math classes.

Instructions

  1. Right-click the list you want to use (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, Summer 2) and click Save Target As....

    New
  2. Save the file where you can find it later. For example, save it to the Desktop by first clicking the Desktop icon. You may also want to change the file's name to include the term (for example, open-Fall-2007.txt). Then click Save.
  3. Import the file into Excel.
    1. Open Microsoft Excel.
    2. Click File > Open.
    3. Change the Files of type: list to All Files.
    4. Click Desktop.
    5. Click the file (in this example, open-Fall2007.txt).
    6. Click Open.
  4. When the "Text Import Wizard" window opens, click Next.
  5. Create a "break line" by clicking at position 5 on the ruler (in the middle of the subject/course), then click Finish.
  6. Click in cell A2 then select Window > Freeze Panes to lock the title row.
Click in cell A1, type SUBJECT, press Enter.
Click in cell B1, type COURSE, and press Enter.
  7. Select rows 2 and 3 (move the mouse pointer to the 2 where it will turn into a right arrow, hold the mouse button down, drag to 3, and release it).
Select Edit > Delete to delete these unnecessary rows.
  8. Select columns A through L (move the mouse pointer to A where it will turn into a down arrow, hold the mouse button down, drag to L, and release it).
  9. Select Data > Filter > AutoFilter.
Select Format > Column > Autofit Selection.
  10. Save the Excel file by clicking File > Save As....
Change the Save as type: list to Microsoft Office Excel Workbook.
    Click Save.

Your spreadsheet is now ready to use. Use the pull-down lists in the column headings to find selected subjects, sections, meeting days/times, etc. You can also use a Custom filter [(Custom...) in the pull-down list] for advanced lists such as "Math or English courses that meet on Tuesdays after 3:00PM."

The following spreadsheets were created on 2007-03-28 and thus contain out-of-date information. They are provided as examples.
